There are five parts to perfect the Single Brew "Pour Over" Method
We have found that it is difficult to get good water.
Many spring waters have undesireable tastes, drinking water is flat, and distilled water is awful. Finally there is a solution. For pennies per gallon you can have a consistently balanced flavor with our Flavor Enhancing Mineral Blend.
Use a non-metallic heating source, such as our glass Whistling Kettle (very reasonably priced).
Coffee roasting is a science and an art.
Fresh roasted beans allow you to experience all of the flavors of the region the coffee is grown in. (see note three under Coffee Tips).
A medium roast gives the fullest flavor without any burnt (charcoal) taste.
The right quantity of roasted beans per volume of water is essential.
We recommend 20 grams of coffee (approximately 1/4 cup before grinding) and 400 mL of water (over 1.5 cups) to yield 12 ounces of coffee (the coffee grounds absorb part of the water).
We recommend using a gram scale (available in our Brewers & Coffee Accessories for less than market price) for a consistent flavor. Coffee bean sizes and weight vary +\- 10% when using volume methods (measuring cups).
Water boiling time is approximately 3 minutes for 400 mL water and 6 minutes for 800 mL. We recommend an extra Whistling Tea Kettle to serve more people faster (don't forget an extra Gourmet Single Cup Filter Holder for those friends and family gatherings).
The water flow rate passing through the coffee grounds significantly impacts flavor.
The proper filter holder (It's About Coffee's exclusive Gourmet Single Cup Filter Holder) is a must. Most filter holders do not flow fast enough to work. We have tested almost every filter holder out there. There wasn't one that passed our tests; so we had to design the perfect filter holder to create the perfect cup of coffee.
The proper filter. Not all 10 cup round filters flow the same. We confirmed Bunn's claim to be a fast flowing filter and recommend them for use with our filter holder. The V-type filters performed the poorest in flow tests and left the worst, most bitter taste.
The achieve optimal flow rate, the coffee beans must be properly ground. The proper grind requires consistency and needs to flow under 4.5 minutes. The grind needs to be adjusted between course and fine until the proper flow rate is achieved.
"Pour Over" single brewed coffee begs to be drank immediately.
If you are going to drink your coffee right away, we recommend a nice ceramic mug, such as our 12 oz Signature Latte Mug.
For any kind of storage, even over 5 minutes, we recommend a Glass Vacuum Insulated carafe or bottle.
